The Waste Management Phoenix Open is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour, held in early February at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) of Scottsdale, Arizona. The tournament was originally the Arizona Open, but was known for most of its history as the Phoenix Open until the investment bank Friedman Billings Ramsey became the title sponsor in October 2003, when it was known as the FBR Open.
TPC Scottsdale has enjoyed its fair share of memorable moments over the years. Even a casual sports fan is likely to recall Tiger Woods' one-hop, raise-the-roof ace at the 16th hole in 1997, one of many images associated with that famous par 3. A smile and a nod may appear on fans that can remember the loose impediment otherwise known as a boulder that spectators shifted for Woods on the 13th hole two years later.
The lowest 4-day score (72 holes) for the tournament was Mark Calcavecchia in 2001 with a total score of 256, which was an incredible 28 under par. In the second round he scored a 60, which was the lowest score in the history of the Phoenix Open tied with Grant Waite in 1996. Calcavecchia had 32 birdies in the tournament, which was also an all-time record.

There have been only two double eagles in the history of the FBR-Phoenix Open. Tom Pernice, Jr. made the first one on the 558-yard par-5 15th hole in 1990. Andrew Magee scored the second on the 332-yard par-4 17th hole in 2001. Magee's shot is believed to be the first-ever hole in one on a par-4 in PGA Tour history.

Mark Calcavecchia (1989, 1992 and 2001) shares the most wins record of three with Gene Littler (1955, 1959, and 1969) and Arnold Palmer (1961, 1962, and 1963)

The coliseum: TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course is a wonderful golf course, always attracts a great field and yet the 16th hole dwarfs all other aspects of this tournament. The par 3 is completely enclosed with seating for 20,000. They refer to it as “beers and cheers, booze and boos.” There is the rest of the golf course and then there’s the 16th. I have always thought the 10th hole might be more distracting. It sits directly opposite the 16th green and players frequently back off shots when applause thunders from the nearby stands. The rest of the golf course is quiet and serene, but the 16th hole always lurks in the minds of spectators and players.
Sight line: It takes a little while to adjust to desert golf. The fairways are a bright green with overseeded rye grass but the rough is dormant Bermuda. It is quite a contrast to see the emerald green bordered by the yellow gold and it makes the fairways appear narrow. They’re not. The landing zones are generous but players have to remind themselves of that fact on the tee.
Quick start: Players who begin their rounds on the first hole have the chance for a quick start. The first and second greens are approached with wedges and the third hole is a reachable par 5. Watch the difference in scoring for players that start on the back nine. The 10th is a tricky dogleg, the 11th is one of the tougher par 4s on the course and the 12th is a difficult par 3. TPC Scottsdale tests a player’s mental toughness when beginning the round at the 10th.
Weather: There is always the danger of frost delays in Scottsdale. The course sits in a bowl and even when surrounding areas have an overnight low in the 40s, TPC Scottsdale bottoms out in the 30s. Greens can be difficult to judge in the early morning because of the cold temperatures. The forecast calls for overnight lows in 40s with afternoon highs in the upper 60s.
Winner, winner: Rickie Fowler showed me a lot last week in his rally to finish sixth. I think that momentum and confidence travels with him from San Diego to Scottsdale. He’s had great success in this tournament, even as an amateur, and should be primed for a good week.
On the season: My pick of Nick Watney finished fourth at the Farmers Insurance Open. For the season, I have one win (Dustin Johnson), one top 10, one top 25 and one top 50.

It's been one year since Kyle Stanley infamously triple-bogeyed the 72nd hole at the Farmers Insurance Open. He'd go on to lose in a playoff to Brandt Snedeker, who emerged from seven strokes adrift in the final round. That set the tone for a recurring theme in 2012 as another six champions -- including Stanley the following week in Phoenix -- would claw back from at least six strokes in arrears entering their last rounds to win.

Power Rankings: Farmers Insurance Open

1. Bubba WATSON Backed up his victory here in 2011 with a T13 last year. Under par in his last eight rounds on the property. Also logged top-10s at Torrey Piney in 2007 and 2009. Hasn't played since a T4 at Kapalua, his 21st top 20 in his last 26 starts.
2. Dustin JOHNSON A staple in this feature returns after withdrawing midway into his second round of the Sony Open in Hawaii due to flu-like symptoms. Won at Kapalua the previous Tuesday. Two top-20s with a T3 (2011) in five starts at Torrey Pines.
3. Charles HOWELL III Ranks fifth in all-time earnings at Torrey Pines, highest among non-winners. He's 10-for-10 with six top-15s, including a pair of runner-up finishes. He's started 2013 with a T3 and a playoff loss. His actual scoring average in eight rounds is 65.75.
4. Nick WATNEY The most recent champion (2009) to sandwich his title with top-10s, one prior and two since. Opened his season with a T13 at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions to extend his streak of top-20s to five (dating back last fall).
5. Brandt SNEDEKER Recorded the first of two wins here on the road to becoming the 2012 FedExCup champion. Ranked T33 in GIR at Torrey Pines but ninth in strokes gained-putting. Also led the field in the all-around. Four top 10s in six appearances.
6. Keegan BRADLEY Two top-25s in as many appearances at Torrey Pines. Led the field in total driving en route to last year's T22, but ranked T45 in greens hit and 34th in strokes gained-putting. Started 2013 with a share of fourth place at Kapalua.
7. Tiger WOODS Six-time winner at Torrey Pines has played just once in the last four editions, settling for a T44 in 2011. Last week's missed cut in Abu Dhabi prevented him from sitting higher in this feature, but he netted nine top-10s in 19 TOUR starts last year.

Kuchar has started 2013 with a T9 finish in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and a T5 in last week's Sony Open in Hawaii. He's finished 25th or better in four Humana Challenge starts, highlighted by a T7 in 2011 and a share of second place in 2010. After hitting some bumps in the road during the second half of 2012, Kuchar appears to be back on top of his game.
Snedeker owns a pair of top-10 finishes in his last three starts at the Humana. He recently finished solo third in the Hyundai, giving Snedeker four finishes of sixth or better in his last five starts dating back to last year. When Snedeker is on this kind of roll he has no issues going low thanks to owning one of the hottest putters on Tour.
After skipping this event every season since 2008, Mickelson returned to the Humana last year with a disappointing T49 finish. While Phil struggled in the first round, he was actually quite fine in the final three rounds of play to suggest he'll do much better this time around. Lefty had his moments early in 2012, but was silent much of the second half until a pair of top-fives in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Hawaii remains the setting for the early season in the PGA, however, with the delays at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions because of inclement weather, there is almost going to be a straight run onto this event at the Waialae Country Cup. This is a par 70 course going at just over 7,000 yards and there is 500 FedExCup points on offer for the winner. PGA Tour Sony Open Golf Defending Champion.

Mark Wilson won the tournament in 2011 with a score of -18, beating Tim Clark and Steve Marino by two shots. It was his first of two PGA wins on the season.

Johnson Wagner came through a competitive pack here last season. The American had started the final round two shots back and during the final round there was a total of eleven players all within one shot of a lead. Wagner though was just solid all weekend and it was the run he strung together over the final twelve holes, going bogey free for a round of 67 that edged him to the title. He didn’t shoot anything worse than a 68 in any round at the event and therefore will be a great fit again for this year to try and defend his title. Had a decent enough warm up at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions without really threatening.
